KENYAN POLITICIANS PETITION AGAINST POLICE DEPLOYMENT TO HAITI
On May 18th, Kenyan
politicians announced that they have submitted a petition to the United Nations
and the United States regarding the deployment of Kenyan police officers to
Haiti.
Led by Ekuru Aukot, the
leader of the Thirdway Alliance Party in Kenya, the politicians argued that
there are other countries more suitable for managing the mission to combat gang
violence in Haiti.
Aukot emphasized the
need for the United Nations Security Council to call upon geographically and
linguistically closer UN members to provide the proposed service. These
statements were made in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Meanwhile, it has been
reported that the Kenyan police officers, who were scheduled to lead a
multinational security support mission in Haiti, are expected to depart from
the country next Sunday.
Aukot criticized the
interference of other nations, particularly the United States and its allies,
stating that it has contributed to the suffering of the Haitian people. The
Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti was authorized by the United
Nations Security Council in October 2023 under Resolution 2699.
In response to Haiti's
request for international assistance in combating the gangs, Kenya volunteered
to lead a multinational security force and later offered to send 1,000 officers
to Haiti.
However, the deployment
of Kenyan police officers has faced legal challenges. The Kenyan High Court
previously ruled that the deployment, which is currently behind schedule, is
illegal.
In February, the court
halted the government from deploying police officers in Haiti, citing that the
National Security Council, the government's top security organ, lacks the legal
authority to deploy regular police officers outside of the country.
