ARAB LEAGUE CALLS FOR UN PEACEKEEPERS IN PALESTINE
At the recent
Arab League Summit held in Manama, Bahrain, a significant call was made for the
deployment of United Nations peacekeeping forces to the occupied Palestinian
Territories. This call, encapsulated within the 'Bahrain Declaration',
underscores the urgent need for international protection in the region until a
viable two-state solution is realized. Moreover, the summit endorsed a proposal
championed by Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa al Khalifa and Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas for an international conference, facilitated by the United
Nations, aimed at resolving the protracted Palestinian-Israeli conflict through
the lens of a two-state solution.
In addition to
deliberating on the Palestinian issue, the summit engaged in discussions
surrounding various conflicts afflicting the region, including those in Libya,
Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. President Mahmoud Abbas used the platform to highlight
the detrimental impact of unilateral actions by Hamas, which he claimed
provided Israel with pretexts to escalate tensions in Gaza.
UN
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his address, emphasized the urgency of
finding a permanent solution to the conflict, labeling it as "an open
wound" that poses a threat to regional stability. Guterres reiterated the
necessity of a two-state solution as the only viable path to end the cycle of
violence.
Furthermore, the
'Bahrain Declaration' emphasized the importance of unity among Palestinian
factions under the umbrella of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO),
which is recognized as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian
people by the Arab League. This unity is seen as pivotal in advancing the
Palestinian cause on the international stage.
Beyond the
Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the Arab League condemned attacks on commercial
ships in the Red Sea, stressing the imperative of safeguarding freedom of
navigation in the region to uphold international trade and security interests.
Representing Oman
at the summit, Sayyid Asaad bin Tarik al Said underscored the pressing need for
a comprehensive Arab stance to address the longstanding injustice endured by
the Palestinian people. He reiterated the call for adherence to international
law and UN resolutions in pursuit of a lasting resolution to the conflict,
underscoring the aspirations for peace and prosperity in the region and beyond.
