UN Road Exercise (Driving Assessment) – SOP-Based Complete Guide For UN Peacekeepers (UNPOL)

UN Road Exercise (Driving Assessment)
SOP-Based Complete Guide For UN Peacekeepers (UNPOL)

The UN Road Exercise is a critical part of the SAAT / AMS assessment process. It evaluates a candidate’s ability to operate a UN vehicle safely, professionally, and in full compliance with traffic laws and UN SOPs. The assessment is not about speed or confidence alone, but about discipline, awareness, and safety.

1️⃣ Vehicle Preparation (Before Moving)
According to SOP, the examiner observes the candidate before the vehicle moves.
The candidate must:

  • Adjust seat properly
  • Adjust all mirrors
  • Fasten seatbelt
  • Check gear position (neutral)
  • Apply clutch control (manual)
  • Check surroundings visually
  • Use indicator before moving

⚠️ Failure to properly prepare the vehicle reflects poor driving discipline.

2️⃣ Driving Conduct During the Road Exercise

During the assessment, the candidate must demonstrate:

  • Continuous mirror–signal–maneuver sequence
  • Clear head movement when checking mirrors and blind spots
  • Obedience to all traffic signs and signals
  • Safe speed adjustment near:

    • Intersections

    • Pedestrians

    • Narrow roads

  • Smooth steering, braking, and clutch control
  • Calm and professional behavior

🚫 The examiner’s instructions must be followed immediately and without argument.

3️⃣ Examiner Focus Areas (Very Important)

Examiners closely observe:

  • Situational awareness
  • Defensive driving techniques
  • Lane discipline
  • Use of indicators
  • Reaction to unexpected situations
  • Respect for pedestrians and other road users

The candidate must remain calm, silent and focused throughout the test.

4️⃣ Ending the Road Exercise (SOP-Correct Procedure)
The Road Exercise ends only when instructed by the examiner.

Correct end procedure:

  1. Stop at a safe location
  2. Gear in neutral
  3. Apply parking brake
  4. Cancel indicators
  5. Switch off engine (if instructed)
  6. Hands off steering wheel
  7. Remain seated until told to exit

❌ Exiting the vehicle without instruction may result in failure.

Conclusion

The UN Road Exercise is a professional driving assessment, not a casual driving test. Candidates who strictly follow SOP, remain calm, and demonstrate safe driving behavior significantly increase their chances of success.
