CLA (COMBINED LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT) READING COMPREHENSION FOR UN SAAT EXAM
COMPLETE DEMOCRACY”

From 0900 hours on Friday the 23rd of May 2011, the streets of the Niacin Capital, Kamahis saw hundreds of thousands of demonstrators chanting slogans for the ousting of the authoritarian regime and the establishment of what they called a "complete democracy."

It was 27th day of the democratic movement. Thousands of semi-armed civilian police were unable to control the crowd in the road. Clashes erupted in every corner of the streets between demonstrators and policemen throwing stones, rocks at each other. Many people on both sides were severely injured and the situation was beyond control immediately, especially in the Kalpak and Gingboo areas. The government deployed Armed Police with three APC in the streets with military backup. The mass grew beyond imagination in the Kalpak and Gingboo areas and people marched with roaring slogans defying security orders and restrictions. Major Sergei Bruno was commanding the Kalpak area with two hundred and forty one police personnel and more problematic Gingboo area was in the command of tough Major Michael Osman.

Major Michael Osman was commanding two hundred fifty eight police personnel. Major Michael Osman was asking the angrily marching demonstrators to keep restraint in his area. Nobody cared about his request. At 12:05 hours, when the situation went beyond control he ordered his men to fire three hundred and twenty five rounds fired at the demonstrators from the shoot gun and eight gas gun shell. Police beat up by stick and button, chased and fired at the fleeing demonstrators. In a moment, two men were dead in the streets and several others were severely injured including five women. There were many empty bullet cases around the vicinity and there were screams and cries from the injured. In a half an hour's period, police were able to disperse the crowd.

The Red-cross and Human rights people rushed the injured to the hospitals and medical centers. A young man about sixteen years of age died on the way. Enraged from the news of death of their friends in the Gingboo area, the agitating mass in the Kalpak area proceeded towards the police throwing stones, burning tyres chanting slogans, and blowing trumpets and whistles. Major Sergei Bruno fired fifty rounds of bullets from his automatic rifle emptying two magazines. They also used five LMG fired there. His men fired forty forty two gas shells and several rubber bullets injuring many people in the streets and suffocating the children and elderly of the nearby houses with the peppery gas. Two women and a man were killed and more than 50 injured. Police secured two dead bodies while the crowd carried the body of one dead. The angry crowds caught hold of five policemen, beat them severely, unclothed them and carried them with them. The crowd took possession of a gas launcher and a pistol from the police. The injured people were carried to the nearby Kamahis City Hospital. The government owned radio and television announced five dead while the private Kamahis television stated six people were dead and more than two hundred injured during the incidents including twenty children. The majority of people have such severe head injuries that the Kamahis Television reported doctors voicing fears of more deaths.

An independent Investigation Commission was established after the success of the movement. There were four men and one woman in the team excluding team leader. The Commission started investigation against officials using excessive force in the peaceful movement. Major Michael Osman who was the chief of Gingboo Local Police Station presented his alibi against allegations of the use of undue force in the Gingboo area while Major Sergei Bruno did not comment. The witness is an UN employee.

On the following day at 11.35 hrs the team visited the area and told all eyewitnesses to attend there. Police team later search the area and discovered one more dead body of an infant nearby the bush. The investigation then referred to the serious crime investigation team to investigate the matter after three days of the incident.
