READING COMPREHENSION TEST # 8
"TRAFFIC ACCIDENT

It was a fine afternoon. The day was Thursday, the 9th of March, 2006. The weather was good. The roads in Monrovia were excellent because the new Government has in the past few weeks been working hard to fix all the bad roads in the City.

UN Police Officer with ID number CP930 was driving a Nissan Patrol jeep with License plate number 422. He had just dropped off his team members and was heading for his own accommodation, located on the street opposite the Airfield. He was driving along Tubman Boulevard, at a normal speed of 35kph. He checked the time on the Dash board clock, it was 1735 hours.

Five minutes later, he was to make a left turn into the street where he lives. He put on the left Indicator light and waited for on coming traffic to clear. The Driver of a Toyota 4Runner jeep stopped to let him cross the road after he had waited for two minutes. All other oncoming vehicles had to stop behind the Toyota 4Runner. He started crossing the road and had almost completed crossing when the Driver of one Toyota Hiace van # 2117 TB that was the fifth car in the queue, apparently in a hurry, drove off the road, overtook all vehicles in his front, came back on the road and had a slide collusion with the rear bumper of the UN car. The van managed to stop about 20 meters from the point of impact. The UN Police Officer, who had stopped at the exact point of the collusion, came out of his car. He conducted a check and found out that there were slide bruises on the right side of the rear bumper and nothing more. A check on the bus showed that the right Headlamp and the Right Traffic Indicator lights were broken. Pieces of broken glass littered the road.

The UN police officer used his mobile telephone to call the UNMIL Security and reported the accident. He also called the UN Police Radio Room with his Radio. One

Follow up
UN Police and LNP joint patrol team arrived first about while UNMIL Security Investigators arrived 20 minutes later.
While the Police Officers were controlling traffic to clear congestion caused by the accident, UNMIL Security Investigators took Photographs of the cars and the scene. UNMIL Security Investigators requested the UN police officer to go with them to their office where he made a statement.
Follow up
The LNP Officers in joint patrol with UNPOL Officers took the Driver of the van who gave his name as Anthony to the Airfield LNP station together with the bus. He was taken to court the following morning for reckless driving.
