READING COMPREHENSION TEST # 9, “CRIME IN LIBERIA

READING COMPREHENSION TEST # 9
CRIME IN LIBERIA

SITUATION REPORT #1
July was the peak month of crime occurrence in the greater Monrovia area in 2005 while November was the safest month, according to a report compiled by UNMIL Police which recorded more than 9,000 crimes in 2005.

The Crime Analysis Team of UNMIL Police reported that during the year, the Police handled an average of 757 crimes per month totaling, 9,082 cases, with 881 cases in July as the highest figure and 646 cases in November as the lowest. February through April recorded less than 700 crimes per month while more than 800 cases were reported monthly from June through September.

The most frequent crime in 2005 was Theft, which accounted for 37 per cent of the total. Among serious crimes, Aggravated Assault had the highest incident rate with 947 cases or 10 per cent of the total, followed by Burglary with more than 500 reported cases. Rape recorded 158 reported cases, while 28 cases of Homicide/Murder were reported.

SITUATION REPORT #2
During the period of national elections in October and November, 2005, crime rate descended significantly, partly because of the boosted security measures instituted by the National and International Police Services as well as other Peacekeepers. However, crime rate picked up again in December as the holiday season set in.

The Crime Analysis Team predicts the upward trend in crime, which began after the announcement of the final election result, will continue in 2006.

SITUATION REPORT #3
The UN Police Planning Team has come up with a number of crime preventive measures to check this rising trend in crime. Prominent among these measures, include :-  a) Increase in the number of Joint patrols (UNPOL and LNP Officers). They conduct round the clock patrols of all nooks and crannies of Liberia. b) New team sites have been opened in strategic areas to enhance police presence. c) Joint Foot patrols are being introduced too.  All the patrols have either FPU officers or the UN Military to provide back up support, since both UN Police and LNP officers are unarmed.
